How Long, Lord?
Writer : Annabelle Bok
(1)"let the little children come to me..." Jesus
How long, O Lord, will You wait How long will You watch While Your little children Who had desired only to dance before You And shout Your praise in joy Are trodden underfoot And put below the ideas of men By their elder siblings?
Are they not proud, Who turn the little ones’ glory to shame Whose itching ears exalt flatterers Whose foolishness exalts falsehood in pride?
Ought the shepherd to care for the sheepfold And the direction of the flock But not for the little ones and the weary? Ought the shepherd to beat those who leap To chain down those who would skip And dance upon the grassy hills?
How long shall your little ones suffer Bending low beneath their yoke Which was light when you laid it But now is weighed down with ordinances?
You have said that it is good For one to bear the yoke in his youth But this yoke is no longer Yours It has become a yoke of man
I shall sit with my mouth in the dust And my tears shall wet the waterless ground I am angry But I desire not to sin Let no iniquity have dominion over me! Let them instead be ashamed Who seek their own will in place of Yours, Who cast aside Your little ones in favour of their plans.
Lord, preserve us! You who observe trouble and grief Lift up Your hand, strike quickly For surely Your eye has seen And Your ear has heard our cry That You should do justice for us That men of the earth may oppress no more.
