Compassion

Writer : Foo Sok Leng

"This poem is about a life experience, where I was shown compassion and mercy by my neurologist. The first two stanzas is about the sickness and how alone I felt whenever I was sick - how it comes and disrupts my life as well as the symptoms of the illness. The third stanza is more about the misconceptions I usually get from people, mainly from people who do not understand the sickness and some unkind doctors who think that I want to skip school by giving excuses. The poem is more of a tribute to my neurologist and to all migraineurs: that there are people out there suffering this ailment, yet kindness and compassion can still be found in this harsh and cruel world." Sok Leng

Loneliness of a being, wretchedness of an ailment;
sets one apart from a multitude of people.
The physicians try to bridge the gap,
that has been perturbing them for centuries.

The illness comes forth stealthily like a thief in the night:
one always gets appalled by its appearance.
Whenever it strikes, it afflicts the soul with anguish without ceasing:
blurring of vision, throbbing of the head,
the nauseated feeling, the phobia of sound and light.

"Is it feigned sickness?" many would ask,
"So that one could skip school and play?"
Yet no one seem to understand the peculiar malady;
all one wanted was to hide in a cool, dark and quiet room,
until it all passes away.

A listening ear,
a benevolent smile;
soothing and encouraging words that calmed one's soul.
A pair of gentle hands and a clever mind,
temporary allay the tormented soul.

A litre of kindness,
a jug of compassion and
a ladle of mercy:
together with the medication the physician has given to one,
it will alleviate the darkest time one faces when the illness strikes again.
