Jesus the Author and Perfecter

Writer : Aaron Lee

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross. Hebrews 12:2

I recently came across an indie rock song written by an American band. Its lyrics include the lines 'Jesus wrote a blank cheque/One that I haven't cashed quite yet/I hope I've got a little more time/I hope it’s not the end of the line.' I read the lyrics several times, but could not understand what this strange song was getting at. I guess it could refer to the need for every sinner to accept Jesus as his Saviour before it's too late. Or, for those who have been saved, perhaps it refers to the urgency of the Great Commission.

Why is Jesus described as the 'author' of our faith? Only twice is he recorded as having written something with his own hand (John 8:6, 8). The gospel writer does not reveal what Jesus wrote in the sand with his finger when confronted with the false teachers. But Jeremiah 17:13 gives a clue as to the significance of this act: 'O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water.'

In this passage, Jesus may have been warning the deceitful Pharisees about the eternal consequences of their hostility towards Him - the true Messiah, the Word of God. Christ was not just the messenger of God's salvation, he was the Saviour himself.

In Hebrews 12, Jesus is also described as the 'perfecter' of our faith. I love this metaphor because it tells me that there is both a beginning and an end to the salvation story. Jesus came from heaven to look for me and to save me from my sins. He bought me with His own blood. And I know that He continues to be with me while I live on this earth - to guide, strengthen and help me run the race to the finish line.

If you are one of the saved, Jesus Christ did not write your name in the dust. Instead, when you called upon Him for rescue, He responded with great love and mercy. Jesus wrote your name into the Book of Life, and He's already writing the next chapter of your life story.
